Funk is a music based on rhythm and feel. Long periods of static chord vamps come alive by the use of subtle and varied musical techniques, and these techniques must be built on a foundation of rock-solid rhythmic control. To build the rhythmic skills needed to play tight funk guitar (or indeed, any music), guitarists must learn to accurately perform almost any rhythm on the guitar before learning how to sit tightly in the groove of the song.Funk Guitar Mastery Develops Perfect Rhythm from the Ground Up
The first half of Funk Guitar Mastery focuses on developing tight, accurate rhythm skills from first principles. For guitarists, funk is a music that is all about playing accurate and groovy 1/16th notes. Every possible pattern of 1/16th notes is addressed and then combined into original and authentic funk guitar parts. Essential skills such as scratches, rests, triplets and chord stabs are also introduced. The second half of the book introduces the vital elements of groove, chord embellishments (such as adding slides and melody notes), chord progressions, riff based ideas and improvisation. Both halves combine seamlessly to develop creative, musical and interesting funk guitar parts. Throughout, the emphasis is on listening to, and locking in with the bass and drums to help you form a tight, functional, grooving rhythm section.Funk Guitar Mastery

After several years of playing the guitar I realized that going back to basics was a necessity. I kinda jumped right into learning other people's songs and never really mastered the basics. So when I saw how this book was laid out with all the rhythmic exercises, it appealed to me. Also, funk is a style of guitar that interests me - among others. I bought this book for the exercises and going through it has greatly improved my playing. One of the nice things about this book is that the exercises, once mastered, can be applied to almost any style of guitar. Another nice thing is that the exercises are laid out logically, but simple enough in structure that a raw beginner can play them as well. If you want to get a better grasp of basics and just plain have some fun, then get this book. The price is certainly reasonable for all you get.Product details

Funk Guitar Mastery The Complete Guide to Playing Funk Rhythm Guitar Mr Joseph Alexander 9781910403211 Books Reviews
Good book, just what I needed to bridge my life info into something palatable lol. Thanks!
This is the 6th book I've purchased by Joseph Alexander and it didn't disappoint. I've never before been able to find a great funk guitar theory book. Since the Red Hot Chili Peppers are my favorite band, I learned the songs but never had a real good understanding of the theory behind the Funk guitar fretboard until now. Thank you!
Just started this book. I had actually bought Joseph's Guitar Fretboard Fluency and found that so well done that I decided to buy this as well. I am using it the way it was written so so far I have been gradually increasing my 16th note strumming and picking to 120BPM...I'm only at 74BPM so far...Having flipped through the pages, I am certain this is going to be a very good book. Doesn't happen overnight but I'm sure this book will really help my playing!
A fantastic book. I've found that the examples are helpful and downloading samples from FundamentalChanges.com really helps in grasping the different examples.
I've been consumed by Nile Rodger's playing of late and this helps in figuring out the rhythms and the inversions he's constantly playing. Although I foresee finding more of Joseph's books to dive deeper into those.
The only thing I can complain about is that the format does not lend itself greatly to viewing the images with the rythm/chord examples. I've worked around that by pulling up the app on my laptop.
I was skeptical to learn from a book because I was concerned it would make my playin too corny. However, the exercises are very help to improve technique, even if the backing tracks are pretty cheesy, and my playing improved appreciably. It's also easier to understand the written exercises than other guitar books I've looked at, and if there's any doubt what it's supposed to sound like you can play the recorded examples. Taking off star because a few of the example tracks were missing for a difficult section I was keen work on. After many emails with Fundamental Changes, they were still unable to supply the tracks and I eventually had to give up on it.
Very good basic funk rhythm guitar instruction book. Suitable for experienced intermediate guitar learners - or a more advanced player not familar with funk rhythm technique. Strong on the crucial 16th note strumming pattern. Well explained and easy to follow logic and examples. Comes with access to audio database for examples of the correct way to play the written rhythm pattern. Lots of useful exercises to get the player through the phases of the different possible rhythms - including mixing quarter note time with triplets. It also covers the most common chords used and their extensions and gets into some single note playing funk lead approaches too. But the focus of this book is to get the student fully grounded in the rhythm element of funk guitar.
The instruction is good without confusing the student. Get this book if that is what you want to learn
I have been looking for a source of information that would help me improve my playing ability in funk and R&B music. I wanted to improve my rhythm playing and articulate fills within this style of music. Funk Guitar Mastery is the perfect source. It breaks down every aspect of the style and highlights the fundamentals required to authentically play in the funk style. The examples are thorough and expertly arranged. The backing tracks excellent for helping to re-enforce the technique being examined. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting improve their guitar playing in the funk genre.
